The City of Enderby will observe the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on Monday, September 30, 2024.
“I encourage all people to spend Truth and Reconciliation Day engaged with indigenous persons and communities. It is important to hear truths and to speak those truths, always,” said City of Enderby Mayor Huck Galbraith.
“As we hear those truths, we gain a better understanding of how to build communities based on reconciliation, respect and a recognition of indigenous history and rights,” Mayor Galbraith continued.
“We are fortunate to reside on the traditional and unceded territory of the Secwepemc, with Splatsin our closest neighbour. I appreciate Splatsin inviting us to share this day and hear the truth that they speak.”
Splatsin is organizing a walk to honour victims and survivors, beginning at 10am at the Enderby & District Visitor Centre at 702 Railway Street. The walk will proceed to Splatsin Centre where a ceremony honouring Splatsin victims and survivors of the residential school system will be hosted, along with lunch and music. Orange shirts will be available for purchase prior to the walk.
“I encourage community members to attend the march and wear their orange shirts on September 30,” Mayor Galbraith urged. “Come listen to elders, survivors, and others. Hear their stories.”
