Responsibilities and Commitments

  • Adhere to all safety standards and operational guidelines while conducting patrols
  • Commit to a minimum of one year of voluntary service for a minimum of 4 hours per month (1-2 shifts per month)
  • Attend all required training sessions and meetings

Eligibility

  • Be 19 years of age or older
  • Consent to disclosure of a Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector
  • Must not be under investigation by any police force
  • Valid BC driver’s license
  • Have and maintain a clean driving record for the past 5 years

What do you need?

What will the City or the RCMP supply or cover?

  • Coordination
  • Orientation Training
  • Police Information Checks
  • Notepads (must be turned in when full or commitment ends)
  • Vehicle decals (magnetic; must be turned in when commitment ends and only used when on duty)
  • Gas reimbursement
  • Volunteer Accident Benefit Coverage (see description)
    • Note: this does not cover an accident involving your vehicle, which must go through ICBC

What should I expect as a COP volunteer?

  • As another set of “eyes and ears” to help out the RCMP, you will be deterring crime through your visible presence while observing and reporting any suspicious activities. This is going to have an amazing impact on our community!
  • All activities must be scheduled by the COP coordinator.
  • Refer media and information inquiries to the COP coordinator; no disclosure of confidential or sensitive information.
  • No interaction with criminals or situations where criminal activity may be occurring, or there is a risk to you, your partner, or other persons or property.
  • No carrying weapons, harassing or chasing of anyone or any vehicle, chasing police or emergency vehicles, breaking the law or violating traffic regulations, or impersonating a police or peace officer.
  • Opportunity to meet new people, interact with RCMP, and help keep our community safe.
