Due to continued reductions in Shuswap River levels, the City of Enderby is ending its Emergency Operations Centre activation for flooding.
All previously closed roads and facilities are now open. The Tuey Park gates will be open as of July 21, 2020 as crews complete some post-flood repair works to the area.
The BC River Forecast Centre has downgraded the High Streamflow Advisory for the Shuswap River, which means that river levels are no longer rising or expected to rise rapidly and the risk of flooding in most low-lying areas has been reduced.
The 10-day forecast for river levels is showing a continued gradual decline. Current river levels, as of July 20, 2020, are 3.295 meters and flows are 186 cubic metres per second. By contrast, on July 6, 2020, the Shuswap River levels were at 4.134 metres and flows were at 316 cubic metres per second. The peak flow rate was on June 5 at 459 cubic metres per second and a level of 4.920 metres.
The City of Enderby reminds recreational river users that levels and flows remain unseasonably high. In comparison to today’s flow rate of 186 cubic metres per second, on the same day in 2019 the flow was 100 cubic metres per second and in 2018 it was 120 cubic metres per second.
River users should be aware that the risks of being on or near a body of water increase due to flow rate, level, and temperature. Activities that may have normally occurred on the river at this time in prior years may still be unsafe.
